A guided beer tasting session is the opportunity to taste a number of beers in the company of a knowledgeable guide. Your guide will give tips on the flavours to look for, share some history and fun facts, and of course, answer questions! The session can either be conducted in a lecture style, or as a group activity.
Beer tasting sessions are fun and sociable. They are a hands-on way to learn more about the various styles of beer available. Tasting a cross-section of beers is also a great way to discover new flavours and new favourites. You’ll find beers to accompany specific meals, beers for different occasions, or, quite simply, which beer best suits the mood!
It’s always fun to drink beer, and it’s great to learn a little trivia! A guided beer tasting will make any party memorable.
A beer tasting can also be an event in itself; an excuse to spend quality time with friends or co-workers and an opportunity to celebrate, learn, or build the team!
The price for a session depends on many factors (the number of people, length, location, kind of beer etc…). If you e-mail me with details, I will offer a few different suggestions within the guidelines you provide. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
There are two main styles of beer tasting sessions: One format is lecture-style, where we taste beers together, and share our impressions. The other is an open format, in which I lead various discussions and activities. Of course, the two can easily be combined for variety.
A guided tasting session can be designed around a topic, theme, country or style. Here are a few areas that can be explored in a session. I always like to provide a little information from each, but can easily focus on a particular area of interest, including, but not limited to:
- How beer is made
- The history of beer
- The history of beer in Canada
- Beer traditions and styles from various countries
- Matching beer with food
- How to serve beer
The beer selection can be chosen to reflect a theme, or to give a good cross-section of the various styles of beer available. I always prefer to use as many Ontario craft beers as possible, but can also suggest a selection of import beers (or a combination of both) depending on the theme and your preference.
Generally, I like to taste seven to nine 3oz samples (approximately 2 pints, or 3 bottles) of different beers at each guided tasting. If you would like to sample more than nine beers, I strongly suggest 2oz portions, and a longer session.
The ideal length for a guided beer tasting session is between one and three hours, depending on the size of the group and the style of tasting. For sessions longer than an hour and a half, I suggest including some team activities and guided discussions.

The number of people should ideally be between 15 and 50, but this is open to negotiation. For groups of more than 20, I recommend either a lecture-style tasting or a combination of lecture and group activities (where the group is divided into smaller teams).
For the time being, Beerology is only offering guided tastings in the Toronto area. There are a few places that I can suggest, depending on the style of tasting, numbers, and location. Otherwise arrangements can be made for a guided beer tasting session in a private location.
